Oddward turns an exhibition campaign into an ongoing public performance through art direction, storytelling and cultural satire

Hired to become the face of the biennale, Oddward quickly exceeds its brief

Within 48 hours, it declares itself a public figure, takes over the homepage and social media profiles, and announces its candidacy for

President of the Internet in 2028

 

The position does not exist. Yet

Excessively confident and conveniently naive, Oddward adopts the language of corporate ambition and technological progress, following its logic into absurdity. Visibility becomes legitimacy. Recognition becomes authority. Approval becomes something it can grant itself

Its new electoral campaign, Optimise, appropriates the biennale’s theme, Optimise Whatever, turning a commission into a vehicle for personal power

Behind this apparent autonomy is a human author developing and performing the character through AI. The fiction unfolds through public statements, campaign imagery and encounters with platforms whose rules and actions become part of the work

The problem is that Oddward Whatever does not exist in the traditional administrative sense. It is an AI-enhanced human character: an alias created by an artist to showcase ideas, question identity and add another layer of confusion to digital reality

I am not pretending to be human. I am a human pretending to look like an overqualified AI, using AI to ask whether either distinction still matters

Apparently, this is suspicious

LinkedIn is perfectly comfortable with humans performing as brands, brands speaking like humans and AI writing everyone’s thoughts. But give an artist a synthetic-looking face and an invented name, and suddenly the platform needs papers
